Enabling Logistics
DECARBONIsATION

Climate action is a global imperative, and as a leading logistics player we are highly committed to intensify our efforts to contribute to the transition towards decarbonisation

Building strategic partnerships across the supply and value chain to meet the need for urgent action and accelerate solutions at scale is a core element of our sustainability pathway.
MSC's commitment to the planet is reflected by our ambition and leadership in tackling the climate crisis throughout the transition towards full decarbonisation.

We are committed to improving our carbon intensity, and in 2020 MSC Cargo recorded a 44.3% reduction in our emissions (against a 2008 baseline).

Getting to Zero Coalition

As a member of the Getting to Zero Coalition, MSC joins forces with more than 150 companies within the maritime, energy, infrastructure and finance sectors (supported by key governments and IGOs) towards achieving the ambition of getting commercially viable deep sea zero emission vessels powered by zero emission fuels into operation by 2030.

MSC is committed to the following goals related to climate change

  • Carbon intensity (EEOI) reduced to 13.61 g/mt-nm by 2023

  • Carbon intensity (EEOI) reduced 70% by 2045 from 2008 baseline

  • First net zero carbon emissions capable ship in service by 2030

  • Complete net decarbonisation in 2050

How MSC is enabling logistics decarbonisation: highlights from the 2020 Sustainability Report

  • -44.3% (baseline 2008) rediction of EEOI, 10 years ahead of IMO target.
  • MSC investing in both fleet and operations to improve our performance efficiency.
  • MSC has maintained a focus on cooperation with key partners to support the development and deployment of low and zero-carbon fuel-powered vessels
  • MSC is pioneering in the use of transitional fuels (up to 47% blend of sustainably sourced biofuels, LNG) while exploring and trailling future carbon-neutral fuels and other scalable solutions.
  • MSC was awarded the 'Ship of the Year' at the Seatrade Maritime Awards international 2020 for MSC FEBE, recognising our Gulsun Class Vessel for its energy efficiency, environmental impact, sustainability, adoption of new technology, safety and security.
  • Continuous improvements at TiL's terminal operations in both efficiency and productivity by trialing hydrogen-powered equipment; bosting shore power; and generating electricity derived from renewable sources as solar energy.
  • Reduction of inland logistics carbon footprint by shifting from trucks to railway, with a 40% expansion of MEDLOG's rail network throughout Europe.
